Funerals and Memorials

Few things are more important than the memory of a loved one.  Larry's professional performance with the Great Highland Bagpipes or Irish Ullieann pipes can help make this a fitting memorial to the life of a loved one.

Memorial Ceremony

Generally speaking, I am available to assist with any part of the ceremony you desire. For a half ceremony booking, I play  appropriate tunes outside of the church or ceremony venue as guests arrive only and have no part during or after the ceremony.  For a full ceremony performance, I can play before the ceremony, during (as desired) and again as guests depart. I generally play appropriate traditional Scottish or Irish tunes and hymns and am sure to discuss your preferences prior to the ceremony. I can play specific tunes upon request if they are in my reportoire....which most common tunes are.

Please note that the Scottish and Irish ceremonies are separate bookings.  This is due to the fact that they require different instruments, different orders of dress, and different tune sets.  Irish ceremonies are much better suited to indoor music.  If a Scottish ceremony is desired--Highland pipes are very loud and some priests and pastors do not allow Highland pipes inside.  Please check with your presiding priest, pastor, or reverend.

Graveside Ceremony

At the graveside, the Irish and Scottish gravesides are different due to the volume of the pipes, order of dress and tunes played.

- Kilt and weather appropriate piping attire
- Great Highland Bagpipes
- Piper leads the casket and bearers to the graveside playing an appropriate tune (frequently Going Home or a Regimental retreat)
- Piper plays an appropriate tune (frequently Amazing Grace) at the end of the ceremony while slowly marching away

Irish graveside ($200 + plus additional travel surcharge if outside the Greater San Antonio area*)
- Appropriate attire for Irish music - no kilt.
- Uilleann pipes and/or Irish whistles
- Piper may play as casket is being lead.  Piper must be seated to play, however.
- Piper plays a lament or hymn at the end of the ceremony as requested by the family.  Piper does not leave the area and remains seated through the end of the ceremony.

Combined Memorial and Graveside Rate
Scottish ceremony: ($300 + plus additional travel surcharge if outside the Greater San Antonio area*)
Irish Uilleann ceremony ($350 + plus additional travel surcharge if outside the Greater San Antonio area*)
This rate applies if you with to have a piper for both the memorial service and grave-site on the same day and when the two services are consecutive (e.g., straight from the memorial service to the graveside).  An Irish memorial ceremony will have an Irish graveside service...likewise a Scottish ceremony will be matched with a Scottish graveside service. The reason is the same as mentioned previously...and the time between the ceremony and the cemetary does not allow time to change and tune new instruments. Additionally, the rate assumes a relatively close distance (15 miles or less) from the service to the gravesite.

Deposit:
A $50 non-refundable deposit is required to secure a booking.

*Additional Travel charges:
If the wedding ceremony is outside of the Greater San Antonio area an additional charge may apply to cover the round trip time and fuel costs.  A flat rate of $40 per half hour will apply .
NOTE: I do not book events with other pipers. My primary goal is to provide a professional performance for you and your guests to remember in positive light for years to come. In all but the rarest of occasions, booking with unknown pipers and/or the expectation to play with other musicians without a rehearsal results in disaster. There are many reasons for this, including dynamics of the instrument (e.g., getting all the instruments in tune with each other), dissimilar tune settings, and varying degrees of musicianship among local pipers.
